Near-death experience
From MysteryWiki
A near-death experience (NDE) can refer to a variety of subjective sensations which can together be characterized as altered states of consciousness occurring during episodes of unconsciousness as a result of life-threatening conditions (Facco and Agrillo 209). The term near-death experience was claimed to have been coined by Dr. Raymond A. Moody, Jr.[1] in 1975 (Moody 15). Despite this claim, the term appears in earlier literature (Robertson and Barford 106; Sleutjes et al. 833).
The experiences have been noted as involving several special elements, namely out-of-body experiences (OBEs), pleasant feelings, seeing a tunnel, seeing a light, seeing deceased relatives, a review of the subject's life, or a conscious return into the subject's body (Van Lommel 19).
Notes
- ↑ Dr. Moody's credentials include a B.A. with Honors in philosophy from the University of Virginia (1966), an M.A. in philsophy from the University of Virginia (1967), a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Virginia (1969), and an M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia (1976); this much is listed on the website Life After Life, located here.
